Chapter 39

“Rhys Hogg.”

Marcie sat on the sofa beside the Eye. She’d been staring at the television for the past hour or so while he worked. Amongst all the shit shopping channels and reality shows, she came across a replay from the homicide league. The Gambling District Gators were playing the Dangerous Dockers. A shake of her head, she said, “You what now?”

The Eye frosted the glass on their main window, shutting out the night-time traffic. “Cameron Oz’s real name is Rhys Hogg.”

“No wonder he changed it.”

Jasmine on his lap, the Ghost’s data stick still protruding from the side, the Eye said, “And Wendy Gravy used to be called Wendy Jacks.”

“Is that supposed to mean something?”

“No.” The Eye tutted to himself before whacking his forehead with the heel of his right hand. “Sorry, I’ve spent so much time in my head, trying to make all the connections. Let me start from the beginning.”

“Please do.”

“Ro Jo.”

“That prick. We really are starting at the beginning, aren’t we?”

The floppy-haired moron who’d played at being a politician appeared on the TV screen. The image of his face took up one wall. The high definition rendered the broken capillaries in his ruddy cheeks. His slack jowls and dead eyes. He always looked exhausted. Depleted. Spectral. “You think I need a visual reminder of the man?”

“Ro Jo’s career ended because of a domestic abuse story leaked through the press, right?”

“Shooting a baby didn’t help.”

“No, but that was afterwards. First, he got discredited as a candidate to be the next mayor. But by whom?”

Marcie rolled her eyes. “If we’re playing guessing games, this is going to take a long time.”

“Come on, Marce, keep up. Rhys Hogg.”

“So the abuse story was a lie?”

“No, he told the truth. I think all this lot have dirt on one another. They were in clubs like the Bullington Boys together. They’ve had sex with the same prostitutes at parties. The same Shetland ponies while away on their fancy retreats. They all use the same drug dealers, and god knows what else they do behind closed doors. To one another. To their poor victims. They’re a bunch of deviant fuck-ups with armies of skeletons in their oversized closets. And because most of them lack any form of moral compass, they will oust one another in a heartbeat if it means they’ll get ahead.”

“So what did Ro Jo do to Rhys Hogg to make him sell him out like he did?”

“I’m not sure.” The Eye snorted an ironic laugh. “Maybe Hogg decided Ro Jo would be bad for the city. Maybe he would make policies that didn’t suit him personally. Maybe he’s settling a score from their school days? Who knows his reasons.”

“But there’s no getting away from the fact that Ro Jo did shoot a baby, so bringing him in seemed like an obvious thing to do.”

“I’m not defending Ro Jo. I’m sure there were many things he deserved being incarcerated for. It’s just interesting how he’s connected to Rhys Hogg.”

“Coincidence?” Marcie said. Ro Jo’s dead eyes continued to stare from the screen.
